Bleeding The ABS System
1. Fill the reservoir to the MAX mark with clean, fresh brake fluid.
2. The brake system must be bled in the correct order. For all vehicles, the wheel order is: right rear, left rear, right front, left
front. For 1991 vehicles, the master cylinder/power booster must be bled before the wheels are bled.
3. For 1991 vehicles, bleed the master cylinder/booster assembly. Loosen and bleed the brake lines at the side of the modulator
one at a time. Have a helper turn the ignition ON and operate the brake pedal in the usual manner while each line is loosened,
bled and re-tightened. Bleed each circuit until the fluid is clear and free of air bubbles.
4. Attach a clear plastic bleed hose to the caliper or wheel cylinder fitting. Place the other end of the hose in a clear container of
fresh brake fluid. Make certain the hose end is submerged in the fluid.
5. Turn the ignition switch ON to cycle the pump.
6. Have an assistant apply and hold brake pedal pressure to pressurize the system.
7. Open the bleed screw 1/2 turn. Close the bleed screw when the fluid entering the container is free of bubbles.
8. Check the reservoir level and refill to the MAX mark. Do not allow the master cylinder reservoir to run dry while bleeding. If
the reservoir runs dry, air re-enters the system; the pump may be severely damaged if a constant supply of fluid is not
available.
9. Repeat the bleeding procedure at the remaining wheels.
